Don’t Confuse Expensive with Exceptional

Don’t Confuse Expensive with Exceptional
In South Africa, we have a classic saying — “Bo bont onder stront.” Loosely translated, it means that everything can look rather grand on the surface, while underneath, there may be a volcano waiting to erupt. And perhaps that is a little like the way we sometimes view events, design and even experiences. Before settling for an extraordinarily expensive floral arrangement simply because it carries a hefty price tag, stop and look around. We are blessed with an abundance of natural beauty in this country. Beautiful greens, indigenous foliage, wild grasses and unexpected little treasures are often right outside our doors. You don't have to look very far to create something exceptional. Expensive things cost plenty of money. Exceptional things deliver quality, intention and lasting value. That is where creativity comes into its own. Dig a little deeper into your creative self. Look at the ordinary differently. Challenge yourself to take something simple and make it spectacular. Because perhaps the real difference between expensive and exceptional isn't the price. It's the feeling. Does the price tag alone make you feel something more? Or is it the thought, craftsmanship, care and creativity behind something that creates the lasting impression? Exceptional is not necessarily extravagant. Exceptional can be beautifully simple. It can be the one-person business that pours everything into their craft. The artisan who doesn't have a huge production line, a massive marketing budget or a recognisable name — but has extraordinary passion, skill and pride in what they do. A brand name can create an expectation of quality. But true craftsmanship creates its own reputation. So perhaps we should look beyond the label, the price tag and the obvious choice. Let's support the person who gives it their all — and delivers far more than what was written on the quotation. Because when creativity, craftsmanship and care come together, something rather special happens. True Craft = Exceptional.
