Don't Tell Me Everything is Fine

Don't Tell Me Everything is Fine
One of the things I have learnt over the years is that I would much rather hear about a problem while it is still a problem than discover it when it has become a disaster. Don’t tell me everything is fine if it isn’t. Tell me what’s wrong. Let’s look at it together, work through it, and find an amicable solution. Because sometimes “fine” simply isn’t good enough. Have we covered everything that needs taking care of? Is the checklist in order? Has anything been overlooked? Are we genuinely happy with where things are? These are the questions worth asking before anyone says, “Everything is fine.” I have never believed in accepting “It’s okay” when the results are telling us otherwise. We don’t set out to deliver okay. We set out to deliver exceptional. And when something isn't right, there is very little value in assigning blame, adding dramatic fiction to the story, or making it personal. None of that fixes the problem. In fact, it usually makes things considerably worse. The facts are the facts. Let’s deal with those. Then let’s work out how to fix what needs fixing. I believe good teamwork is not about pretending everything is perfect. It is about being honest enough to say when something isn't — and trusting the people around you to help find the solution. Problems are easier to solve when we face them together. After all, teamwork really does make the dream work.
