The Art of Looking Calm While Everything is Moving
If I had one rand for every time someone said, “You’re handling it so well,” I’d have enough money to retire — and actually start handling it well.
Let’s be honest. Most of us aren’t calm. We’ve just become really good at pretending to be.
Modern adulthood is basically a full-time improv act. Inside, we’re anxious, overwhelmed and over-caffeinated, but on the outside, we look perfectly poised because, apparently, we have an audience.
We keep our Slack status on AVAILABLE even when our soul is on BUFFERING.
We look well assembled — like a great chair with three screws missing.
Sound familiar?
Staying calm while everything around you is moving is a little like being the centre of a spinning wheel. The world can keep turning; you don’t necessarily have to turn with it.
Real stability doesn’t come from trying to stop everything from spinning. It comes from finding your own centre.
Sometimes that means taking a breath before responding. Sometimes it means stepping away for five minutes. Sometimes it means admitting that you don’t actually have all the answers.
And sometimes, quite honestly, it means having another coffee and pretending you’ve got this.
Because perhaps “You’re handling it so well” doesn’t mean you’re calm.
Perhaps it simply means you’re still standing in the middle of the chaos — finding your centre, taking the next step, and figuring it out as you go.
And maybe that’s handling it pretty well after all.
