The Invisible Work

Now isn’t this just the most profound line. Because there’s a TON of that. It all starts at that initial meeting with a possible — or probable — new client. And before anything is even confirmed, your brain has already gone into overdrive. You’re quietly piecing things together, imagining possibilities and getting your thoughts aligned as to where you could take this baby. Subconsciously, whether you’ve received the deal or not, the cogs are turning. And then comes the invisible work. The hours that nobody sees. The fifteen-or-so-page production brief that somehow appeared out of nowhere. The endless emails, calls, texts and double-checking to make absolutely sure that everything is as it should be. And then, of course, there are those nights when you’re lying awake at 2.15 in the morning because that stupid little thing called self-doubt has decided to pay you a visit. “Did I think of everything?” “Is everything covered?” “WHAT IF…?” Sound familiar? We all know the lists are endless. But perhaps there is one person we sometimes forget to put on the list. Ourselves. Because in the end, it is of very little value to anyone if you have just created an absolute masterpiece, but you’re standing in the middle of it looking like a puzzle with several very important pieces missing. The invisible work matters. But so do you.
